Course Description

Adolescence is a time of rapid growth, self discovery, experimentation, and desire for more autonomy. During this formative time, youth require proper nutrition, hydration and rest. Student athletes, in particular, need additional nutrients to support growth. Educators can play an important role in helping students make healthier choices.

This course will provide evidence-based nutrition recommendations and hydration strategies to maximize performance and reduce the risk of injury.  Furthermore, participants will evaluate communication strategies for optimal behavior change.  They will also evaluate the risks associated with supplement use and investigate evidence-based resources to ensure athlete safety.  Finally, educators will learn the warning signs of unhealthy eating and training practices, and be armed with resources to best assist student athletes.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the unique nutritional and developmental needs of student athletes
  • Explain the role of proper nutrition and hydration for optimal performance and evaluate effective communication strategies to promote positive behavior change.
  • Assess challenges to dietary changes and propose effective strategies for enhanced performance.
  • Evaluate the risks associated with supplement use and direct student athletes to safe, evidenced-based nutrition resources.
  • Identify characteristics of unhealthy training practices or disordered eating patterns and implement strategies and protocol to optimize student safety.

Course Instructors

  • “I appreciate the information and how it was presented to me. Thanks for being so positive and upbeat”

  • All of the material presented in this course was relevant and useful. I will be able to apply what I learned about nutrition and hydration immediately in my own life as well as with my student athletes.

  • “The instructor had great feedback!”

  • “I really enjoyed how this course was broken down. There was a topic on food types, when to eat for best performance, hydration and all of them had just the right amount of information.”

  • “A wealth of knowledge about sports nutrition and the many benefits of knowing how to guide athletes in the right direction, whatever their goals may be.”

  • “I have liked all the classes from this professor, but I liked how this complex topic was broken down into digestible chunks that allowed me to have simplified ways to explain this important topic to even my middle school athletes. As a coach I now have more tools in my tool belt.”

  • “I really enjoy the delivery of the lessons. Everything is so clear, easy to understand, and navigate! I enjoy the quiz formats and spacing of the lessons as well.”

  • “I love how applicable everything we learned is to everyday life for ourselves and our students.”

  • “Juliette does an amazing job of providing many useful resources and she has such amazing videos to support your learning.”

  • “This course was perfect for the goals that I have as an educator and coach. As we try to meet the needs of a diverse population many different aspects were looked at in this course. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the design of this course!”

  • “Excellent and succinct information! The assignments were relevant and effective in helping me to learn this material.”

  • “This instructor is AMAZING!! I love her. I have taken all of her classes. I hope she adds more to her repertoire!”

  • “I learned so much from this course. The information was very relevant. I also liked taking the quizzes.”

  • “I always learn so much from Juliette and have loved every course I’ve taken from her. She helps give information that transfers from work to home and I love that!”

  • “I loved all the food options that were suggested. I love when there are tangible suggestions that you can take back the next day. I also liked how you made it accessible to classroom teachers, and not just coaches.”

  • “Learned crucial nutrition information for student athletes. Especially the hydration, fat, carb and protein intake needed to enhance performance.”

  • “I like how the information is presented and the activities help synthesize the information. Each lesson is organized well and moves smoothly from one to the next.”

  • “Juliette gave clear and tangible ways to help student athletes be healthier and to better understand the importance of nutrition.”

  • “I was immediately able to revise some of my existing lessons to reflect more modern science and this new learning.”

  • “The course content was practical and could be directly applied. The videos and Google slides were clear and easy to follow/listen to. The Case Study was a great assignment to think about and apply my knowledge.”

  • “The information was super interesting and easy to digest (no pun intended). While this was geared towards those working with student athletes, Juliette made specific adjustments to relate it to all teachers, not just coaches.
It also was taught in such a way that I could apply the information and knowledge to my own food choices, and I haven’t been a student athlete in about 10 years!”

  • “As a coach of two different high school sports the material had an almost immediate application and relevance. Key takeaways from lectures were helpful.”

  • “I really appreciated the resources that were provided to supplement the course. I plan on using what I created in real life and parents are more likely to be on board if they can read about what I am promoting.”
